INDUSTRY AND AUDIENCE
Ownership and Franchise
Give summary of company who owns the product and a summary of the history of the Assassins Creed franchise : focus on key narrative elements, genre, recurring themes and USP of franchise as well as range of consoles and individual games in franchise.
The company Ubisoft owns the franchise, the idea of 'Assassin's Creed' originated from a Prince of Persia sequel concept. The AC games usually follow a certain pattern, the Assassins vs the Templars, the assassins are seen as good while the Templars are seen as evil, although sometimes the line between good and evil is quite thin, the game is quite good at questioning your moral code, especially in the recent ones. The games, from AC I - AC III, Desmond Miles is the protagonist and sacrifices his life to save the fictional world. The audience develops a connection with the main character, seeing him go from an impulsive child to a calm and collected assassin who sacrifices his life for the greater good, Later on, Abstergo (which are the modern day Templars) retrieve his burnt body which is why in Black flag, you are literally the main character, reliving the memories of Desmond from the samples Abstergo collected from his dead body (outside of the Animus). During the beginning, Desmond decides to abandon the Creed and try a live a normal life, but gets kidnapped and forced to relive the memories of his ancestors, starting with Altair, this is when he is referred to as Subject 17 (and later, Sample 17 in AC Black Flag) and we learn that reliving your ancestor's memories for long periods of time gives you the bleeding effect. The Assassins have a motto they live by, "Nothing is true, Everything is permitted." To say that nothing is true, is to realise that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say that everything is permitted. Is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic, this quote and belief is the framework of the assassins, and is a quote from the original assassins (called Hashashin) in the 11th century. Usually they tend to serve in the shadows. The Assassins fight for freedom while the Templars believe that control is necessary for our survival and that free will incites chaos.
