CHARITY ADVERT Analysis 1 MOST SHOCKING SECOND A DAY
General conventions
The purpose of this advert is to show how children in war torn countries are affected, it uses guilt/empathy on people who aren't going through things like this (So in first world countries)
Use of camera and editing
e.g use of close ups to show emotion and create empathy, range of shot types in advert.
(Answered in the question below.)
How the advert uses editing ( length/timing/of cuts, order and selection of shots) to structure its narrative and create response in the audience
It uses quick cuts in order to show how fast it's happening around the world, and to show how everything can be fine one day and disastrous the next.
Props , costume and mise-en-scene
Key objects , how setting is shown clearly , how props and background are used to show the narrative
Use of gas masks, dirt on the kids face.
Lighting and colour
The lighting goes from orange/warm to blue/cold to show the change in the environment.
Sound
Music ? There's no music, just maybe eerie background noises and the news playing.
Sound effects ? Explosions, news programs etc.
Spoken word ? "Make a wish, darling", "Happy birthday to you.." to show how desperate they are and how they're trying to have a sense of normality in a chaotic environment.
How are these used to appeal to the audience and deliver the narrative and messages of the advert
The use of children in chaotic situations makes the audience feel sorry for them and donate to their cause, especially if the audience has children so this is meant to be for a mature demographic, the subtle change from happy to destructive shows how these kids once had a normal life and that nobody deserves the fate they've been given. This message is really powerful as it makes you feel sorry for them.
Language
How written/spoken language provides meaning or provokes a response in the audience.
The lack of words makes it more powerful in my opinion, the use of police sirens and explosions makes the advert more impactful and provokes a response from the audience.
"Just because it isn't happening here, doesn't mean it's not happening."
Quote is really powerful and is designed to open the mind of the reader to global issues.
