Explore the Crime Drama section on BBC player and find examples of three different programmes in three different crime sub-genres. Use the list of categories in crime below:
Crime dramas typically focus on the moral dilemmas of criminals, they usually explore the criminal's psyche and reasoning behind the crimes they've committed. Crime thrillers are generally much more realistic and grim, especially with their portrayal of the criminal world.
The Detective or investigative crime drama is a sub-genre of crime fiction and drama in which an investigator or a detective—either professional, amateur, or retired—investigates a crime, often murder. A great example of this is Luther, as the main character (John Luther, played by Idris Elba) is a Detective Chief Inspector, dedicated to solving crimes by any means.
The rural crime drama is set in the countryside rather than the city and may also be a cozy or parody crime drama. One example of this is 'Death in Paradise', which investigates murders on an island in the Caribbean. The show is quite formulaic in terms of plot, often ending with a comedic scene or a celebratory scene at a bar.
The police procedural is a story in which the detective is a member of the police, thus the activities of a police force are usually convincingly depicted. One example of this is 'The Killing' which can be labelled as a Police Procedural due to the main character being a member of the police force. The show has received international success due to the BBC importing and broadcasting shows from different countries, particularly from Denmark and Sweden, as well as France and Italy.
